(Also known as diabetes mellitus, pre-diabetes, juvenile diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, hyperglycemia)
Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above the normal range. Although we always have some glucose in our blood, high levels can cause major health problems, such as heart disease. Diabetes is not selective when it comes to age, as the young, middle aged, and the elderly are all victims of this disease.
The pancreas secretes a hormone, insulin, which helps glucose move to the cells in our body. Glucose is made from the food we eat, and it’s also made in our liver and muscles. Our bodies use glucose for energy. When a diabetic’s body either does not make enough insulin or it cannot use its own insulin, sugar begins to build up in the blood.
The signs of diabetes are varied, and they include being very thirsty, losing weight without trying, having sores that do not heal, and blurry eyesight. A diabetic may have quite a few symptoms, or maybe none at all.
There are three main types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system has attacked and destroyed the beta cells of the pancreas, so the body no longer makes insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common and can show up at any age, although it has been called adult-onset diabetes. In Type 2, the pancreas tries to keep up with the body’s demand for insulin, a condition that results when the liver, muscles, and fat do not use insulin properly. Given enough time, the pancreas reaches a point where it cannot secrete enough insulin in response to meals.
Finally, gestational diabetes occurs during the late stages of pregnancy. Although this normally goes away, it increases the chance of developing diabetes 2 later in life.
To diagnose diabetes, there are two tests used to measure the presence of blood sugar problems. One is the direct measurement of glucose levels in the blood during an overnight fast. The second test is a measurement of the body's ability to appropriately handle excess sugar presented after drinking a high glucose drink. Sometimes an illness or another disease can disrupt the results of these tests; therefore, your healthcare professional will also include a complete physical and history to determine if there are other factors affecting your blood glucose level.
Once diagnosed, treatment will vary for each individual. Type 1 diabetics will require insulin, which is in the form of an injection under the skin. With all three types of diabetes, the patient will follow a diabetic diet and try to reach ideal body weight through regular exercise. Obesity especially appears to be a main factor in the onset of diabetes, especially in those who are genetically disposed to the disease through a family history, which is why diet and exercise are so important to effectively treat the disease.
The Healthy Green Lifestyle Center recommends a personal assessment that will help identify the potential triggers that exacerbate the condition. The results from an assessment will provide suggestions to help reduce the exposure your environment has on your condition.

Recent Success Story - Patient with Low Blood Palates
A Young College Student with thrombocytopenia, (low blood palates) was receiving 2 blood transfusions a week and steroid treatments. Coach Shelly helped this young lady develop a plan to address the low blood palates and identified some specific herbs that could help this condition.
After 2 weeks on these herbs the patient was able to get off blood transfusions because her palates levels came back to a healthy range and within 4 weeks she was able to get off steroids completely.
A nice side benefit …..she lost all the weight gain related to the steroid use and she remains completely healthy today without any prescription medications!
