Hypothyroidism

(Also known as underactive thyroid, autoimmune thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In severe cases, hypothyroidism becomes myxedema.)

Your thyroid is a small, butterfly shaped gland that is located in your neck, above the collarbone. It produces several hormones, but the most important are T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). Our thyroid influences every organ in our body, even telling our organs when to speed up and when to slow down. This small gland actually regulates how we metabolize our food and produce heat.

When something goes wrong with your thyroid and the levels of T4 and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) fall below normal, your whole body is affected. You may start to feel tired all the time, your hair may fall out in large chunks, you may have trouble fighting off infections, and you have aches in your joints, hands and feet. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism included but are not limited to:

* Dry Skin
* Difficulty concentrating
* Inability to lose weight
* Slow body movements
* Brittle nails
* Cold intolerance
* Constipation
* Early puberty

If you are concerned that the above information may apply to you, a family member or a friend we suggest you conduct some additional research and seek the advice, guidance and support of an experienced health care professional. In many cases it will be wise to seek the advice of a TEAM of health care professionals that can support you through the entire process of diagnoses and successful treatment.

In conclusion, the more you know and understand about potential illnesses and their triggers affecting you and your family the more effective you and your health team will be in diagnosing and treating these challenges.
